Hyangchon Cultural Center gate-type anamorphic LED display, Daegu

Jung-gu Office, Daegu · Jung-gu, Daegu · 2023.10 Completed

대구 향촌문화회관 게이트형 아나몰픽 LED 전광판

Built as a five-sided display to maximize the 3D effect of anamorphic content. The 12.8 m-long structure has no middle pillar, keeping a wide open view, and uses a special method that minimizes bending moment. It is the first structure of its kind attempted in Korea.

Before installation

The original entrance to Hyangchon Cultural Center was a plain architectural structure that did little to express the character of a cultural venue. Three pillars in the middle of the passage split the way into the rear space into several openings, limiting openness and sightlines.

For this project, we planned a gate-type anamorphic LED display that wraps the entire entrance, catching visitors' eyes without damaging the exterior of this heritage building.

After closely reviewing the structure's dimensions and loads through on-site measurements, we produced a custom design so the LED modules and frame could be installed securely. The display acts as a media gate that naturally links the building entrance to the garden, enhancing both the symbolism and the visual impact of the space.

In particular, we aimed for a design that respects pedestrian flow while harmonizing with the building.

Installation process 6 steps

  1. Removing the existing structure

We removed the existing canopy and finishing materials to make way for the new structure.

During demolition, we used methods that minimize damage to the existing building, while managing safety in the work zone and protecting surrounding facilities.

To keep pedestrians safe throughout construction, we installed safety fencing and kept a flagger on duty at all times.

  2. Steel base frame fabrication

We installed a custom-made steel frame to support the LED display.

We aligned the frame precisely level and plumb to prevent distortion and ensured the structural rigidity to support the weight of the LED cabinets. The main frame uses H-beams designed to handle bending moment and structural loads, and galvanized framing improves water and corrosion resistance, providing a solid base for the cabinets.

We built it robustly with durability in mind to prevent deformation and damage over long-term use.

  3. Rust-proofing and painting

Because the steel structure is exposed to the outdoor environment for years, we painted it to prevent rust.

Welded areas in particular have weaker coatings and are prone to corrosion, so we thoroughly prepared the surfaces and applied rust-proofing and a primer coat to prevent rust from forming and spreading.

After rust-proofing, we applied a finish coat to ensure both durability and a quality appearance.

  4. LED cabinet installation

We installed the LED cabinets one by one on the finished frame and adjusted them precisely to minimize offsets between cabinets, so the whole screen joins seamlessly.

We added a separate access hatch at the top for internal inspection and maintenance, and planned the cabinet layout and spacing so that workers can reach them safely and easily.

After installation, we carefully applied silicone waterproofing to cabinet joints and gaps to keep rain, moisture and insects out of the structure.

  5. Power and data cabling

We systematically connected the power and data cables for stable operation of the LED display. Given the display's high peak power draw, we made electrical safety and fire prevention the top priorities in the cabling work. We also routed all cables internally so none are exposed, giving a cleaner finish and making future inspection and maintenance easier.

  6. Screen testing and final inspection

After all installation was complete, we tested the screen. We checked brightness, color and video connections and performed calibration so the image looks natural from any position. We then played actual content for a final check for any issues.

Completed installation

The completed gate-type LED display at Hyangchon Cultural Center. The large display wrapping the entrance works as a single media facade, giving visitors a striking first impression.

With excellent visibility by day and vivid video by night, it has become a new landmark of the Bukseong-ro cultural district in downtown Daegu.
